Legislative Assembly

~This was the ruling body that the National Assembly gave the power to.

~Basically, they have a lot to deal with:
The King tries to flee the country (and this doesn't work, because they needed him to show that they were a happy little constitutional monarchy) They catch him and bring him back. They don't really know what to do. In the meantime, they lie and say he was kidnapped.

~While all of this was going on, emegres (nobles-in-exile) had left France and were forming an army at Coblenz. They were also telling other monarchs, "Hey, this isn't good. You see what happened to Louis? That could happen to you!" (This is why the king's attempt at escaping was so important to everything that was happening.)

~Basically, in April, 1792, France went to war agaist a coalition of Austria, Prussia and the emegres. And, as Prussian forces got closer to Paris, the Duke of Brunswick threatened to level the city if the royal family was harmed. Louis XVI published this decleration in the Brunswick Manefesto, expecting it to scare the people. But, they only became angry that their king appeared to be on the enemies' side.

~So, on August 10, 1792 armed Pariasians stormed the royal palace and forced the king from his throne. The Legislative Assembly was forced to declare that Louis was suspended. Then, half of them fled. A new government was needed.

The National Convention-
~For awhile, there's panic, mostly because of the lack of government and the armies headed towards France. Radical journalists like Marat were causing trouble. People were worried about prisoners escaping from overcrowded cells and becoming a counterrevolutionary force. So, Parisians invaded the prisons and slaugtered 2000 prisoners-September Massacres.
